Certified Copies -- Most Counties except Durham, Guilford and Granville
We have long had the policy of ordering certified copies for you (if you want them). The Register of Deeds (in any county) charges $10 a copy, and we recommend (as discussed elsewhere) that you get two copies if the bride is changng her name. So we ask that you add $20 to our basic fee, and we will order the copies at the same time that we send in the signed license application forms after the wedding. And in a week or two, you will receive your certified copies of your marriage license.
This process has always worked fine -- in most counties. (Don't ask why some counties are different.)
So far, so good.
Durham, Guilford and Granville Counties Only
But we have -- fairly recently -- run into a problem with three counties: Durham, Guilford and Granville. None of them will accept a request for certified copies from anyone except the bridal couple. And Durham actually requires that you submit identification -- in the form of a photocopy of your driver's license or the like -- when you order the copies by mail. It makes no difference to them that you have just recently provided identification to get your license, and that the request is for the copies to go to the persons named on the license, and usually to the home address on the license. (If you go in person to the courthouse to order certified copies, you will need to show them your driver's license or other ID, but need not submit a photocopy -- that's only when ordering by mail.)
So if you get your license at the courthouse in Durham, Guilford or Granville County, we cannot order your certified copies for you, and ask that you not include that $20 with our fee. For all other counties (at the moment), we will be happy to order your certified copies for you if you want them and if you include the
$20 with our fee.
Suggestion: If is convenient for you to get your license at a courthouse other than Durham, Guilford or Granville, please do. Then we can order your certified copies for you. But if one of those is the only one convenient for you, please be aware that you will need to order certified copies on your own.
