More material will be added from time to time.           Return to Sanford Family History home page.
If you have waded through any of the preceding pages of this genealogy, you know that the best source for Sanford genealogy up about 1911 is Carlton E. Sanford's monumental work, "Thomas Sanford, Emigrant to New England." And you know that I refer to him very familiarly as Carlton Sanford, Carlton S., Sanford (often with a page number), Thomas Sanford, or just Sanf.
And you know too the meaning of the symbols and numbers before names:
+ means more information in the listing of the next gneration.
The number is sequential, with the first name in this listing being 1, and counting from there.
Roman numerals number the offspring of any one couple.
Another bit of shorthand: I often indicate the number of marriages in parentheses.     "(2-3)" means this is the husband's second marriage and the wife's third.
Interestingly, from the 1830s until 1888 Ameniawas the home of Amenia Seminary, a highly regarded private secondary school in the days before public high schools. Young men from all across New England -- including many Connecticut Sanfords -- came here to prepare for the university. Why was Hannah Merwin Sanford buried in Amenia? Was she born there?
Though slavery was probably not widespread in New England, it was also not rare. I have found a number of mentions like this, where Stephen bequeaths "to my negro servant, Jesse, property and freedom."
"Unk" stands for "unknown."
"Cornet" was the lowest of commissioned officers in the cavalry, who carried the colors or guidon of a troop of cavalry, an honored position no longer in existence)
Joseph Sanford was among the first of a wave of settlers -- including a number of Sanfords -- from Connecticut into new territory in western and northern Vermont.
Oliver Sanford was another earlier settler of Vermont.
Because of sloppy maps and grants issued by England, several states had claims to land now in Pennsylvania. Before the Revolution, the Susquehanna Company issued claims ("rights") to over 1500 Connecticut residents, to land which was also claimed by the state of Pennsylvania. Most of these claims were not settled until after 1800, after much conflict, litigation and, in some cases, bloodshed.  It is unlikely that Oliver Sanford's "right" in the Susquehanna Purchase ever led to possession of land, and he may have recognized that his "right" consisted of little more than a worthless piece of paper.
Another migrant to Vermont.
"Samuel-3, Ephraim-2" etc: This called the "Upline," tracing the line of descent back to the original ancestor -- Thomas Sanford.
For early generations, I have included offspring of married daughters. For generations beyond about the fifth, I list spouses of daughters but not their children. After I have documented all lines bearing the name of Sanford, I hope to go back and enter information on descendants with other last names. There just aren't enough hours in the day to do it all immediately.
